Sofia Teferi is an experienced medical director, department chief, and physician executive specialized in pediatric care in the acute and ambulatory care settings. She is experienced in healthcare management, healthcare information systems (EPIC), patient safety, EHR systems, medical and clinical practice operations, Lean Six Sigma, clinical performance measures, partnership and alliance management and recruitment policies.

She is known for her ability to organize and motivate teams to solve complex organizational process, clinical outcome, and interpersonal challenges to achieve strategic goals tied to growth, development of clinical service lines, and development of high-performing clinical teams.

She served as Medical Director and Chief of Pediatrics for a 391 bed, $2.2 billion patient service revenue, 2,500 FTEs acute care hospital within a Catholic health system. The hospital was a “flag-ship” facility within the national health system in terms of operating performance, quality, and clinical outcomes. She served as medical director for the pediatric hospitalist and pediatric forensic programs.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Led a plan to grow a pediatric program within an acute care hospital to the tertiary level of care, resulting in volume growth to one-third market share in a 1.3M populated MSA

  • Led the clinical service line implementation and installation of an EMR within a 391-bed acute care hospital

  • Promoted to medical leader role within one year under a new hospitalist program (employed model) within a regional health system

  • Achieved a 50%+ increase in the number of well-child visits while working as the solo-practice pediatrician within a medically under-served market

  • Received medical leadership and community service awards including: Richmond Top Doc, American Academy of Pediatrics Scholarship, National Health Service Scholarship, and the Reach Out and Read Early Literacy Grant

  • Led a plan to expanded an acute care pediatric hospitalist program to include coverage for nursery services and medical student teaching

  • Successfully negotiated contracts and memorandum of agreements to hire and create affiliation to provide full  spectrum of services to serve the community
